Happy in Holbrook and Awestruck in Albuquerque (12/20/18)

The KOA in Holbrook was amazing!  Not just because of the kiddie cage, erm, sleeping loft in the cabin, but because it had a REAL playground.  You know, the old school one we all grew up with where you could knock out your teeth or break a limb. The kids had never experienced a metal merry-go-round before! Amazing how they instinctively know how to throw their feet down for brakes and before we left they were running and pushing and hopping on like pros!

Hold on tight, Joseph!

Woooaah!

Jane tried to show him how it's done,
but he wasn't interested.

A little bathroom reading.

We hit the road early and traveled along Route 66 for a bit, making sure to snap some pictures of the famous Wigwam Motel. Now, the kids actually "get" the reference in Pixar's Cars movies.

They had their souvenir money burning holes in their pockets, so when we were ready for a morning potty break, we stopped at the Indian Center where we were met with some friendly (thank goodness) dogs (that Mommy and Daddy kept a very close eye on). Everything in the kids' section was in their $5 price range (thanks Uncle Steven and Aunt Linda). Grace found a plastic pony and the rest of the kids picked out cap guns with holsters and sheriff badges.

This dog was sooo sweet and greeted us when we pulled up.
He would have gotten in the car with us.  You can see Arthur's
shadow to the left, though, as he is ready to yank Joseph back,
if necessary.

"Stick 'em up!" (Unless your Grace, then "Ride 'em, Cowgirl!"

When we got to Albuquerque, we stopped in at The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. I had heard Dr. Jack ReVelle speak at the Whittier Public Library about the Goldsboro Broken Arrow (definitely click on that link!) and was hoping to see information about him, but apparently it's been reclassified. All that I could find was a timeline with it mentioned and bomb casings, so I was able to at least get an idea of how big the bombs were.

Juxtaposing this with the photos of my
children on the playground this morning
leaves me too sad for words.

Agreed.

It amazes me that this lamp exists.

If there's a train in the building, he'll find it.

Another Delorean fan.

This B-52 was specialy modifed to test differnt types delivery systems for nuclar weapons

To the left is a bomb that the B-52 would have carried.  To the right,Rosalie noticed something even our
docent hadn't - eyeballs!

My friend at the library, Wes Murray, was a navigator
on a B-52 bomber during Vietnam. He also gave a
fascinating talk on what this job entailed.

After the Museum, we checked in at the KOA, ate a Costco pizza (yum!), drank hot cocoa, watched the SpongeBob movie and hit the hay.
All sorts of beds to choose from and he prefers
to make a bunkhouse under the suitcase bench
in our room.
